The United States Embassy in Nigeria on Tuesday brought attention to a growing concern regarding fiscal irresponsibility among Nigerian state governors.

The embassy shared a recent investigative report detailing how billions are being spent on building or renovating government houses, even as the populace faces widespread economic hardship.

The report, titled “Nigeria’s ruling class splashes billions on government houses” by The Africa Report, critically examines the political elite’s “extravagant spending” during a period when many Nigerians are struggling with the economic reforms introduced by President Bola Tinubu.

The report states, “While Nigerians are tightening their belts, the same cannot be said of the ruling class.”

Citing specific instances, the report noted that Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde’s administration approved ₦63.4 billion for the renovation of the Government House, which he reportedly deemed an “embarrassment” and “unbefitting.”

Similarly, in Gombe State, one of Nigeria’s poorest, Governor Inuwa Yahaya is constructing a new ultra-modern residence costing ₦14.9 billion, in addition to a ₦14.23 billion project for a new House of Assembly complex.

The U.S. embassy, quoting voices from transparency and accountability organizations, shared the article on its official X (formerly Twitter) handle, stating, “Such alleged lack of fiscal responsibility fuels inequality and erodes public trust.”
