Former Senator Ibrahim Musa Kontagora, who represented Niger North Senatorial District from 2011 to 2015, has died in Abuja following a medical emergency.
His family confirmed his death to Peoples Gazette on Thursday afternoon.
According to the report, Kontagora died at Nizamiye Hospital after the facility allegedly refused to perform a critical surgery because he could not immediately pay the full $30,000 bill.
A family member told The Gazette that the hospital had a policy of accepting full payment before treatment, and by the time the family had scrambled to raise the remaining $15,000 balance, it was too late.
While a hospital spokesperson confirmed the policy, they did not take responsibility for the tragic outcome.
Niger Governor Mohammed Bago was reportedly among the individuals who helped raise funds for the surgery. Other politicians, including Senator Aliyu Abdullahi, have expressed their condolences.
Kontagora is survived by his wife and children. He was scheduled to be buried on Thursday afternoon at the National Mosque, Abuja, according to Islamic rites.
