What I Told EFCC Officials Who Interrogated Me – Tambuwal

Former Governor of Sokoto State and serving Senator, Aminu Waziri Tambuwal, has spoken out about his recent encounter with the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), insisting that he cannot be intimidated.

Describing the event as a “brief visit,” Tambuwal said he was invited by the anti-graft agency on August 6 and went voluntarily.

He returned for further questioning on August 10 and 11.

After being questioned for hours, he was asked to produce two sureties before he could be released. Tambuwal refused, arguing he should be released on his own recognizance due to his public service record.

He stated: “I told them to go back and tell the chairman of the EFCC that I am a former Speaker of the House of Representatives with an unblemished record, a two-term Governor of Sokoto State, a serving Senator, and a Commander of the Order of the Niger. I should be allowed to go on self-recognition.”

Despite appeals from his legal team, the EFCC refused to change the bail conditions, and Tambuwal was detained overnight before being released the next morning.

Tambuwal questioned the timing of the EFCC’s actions, asking: “Why now?” He linked the events to what he described as a “kangaroo commission of inquiry” set up by the current Sokoto State administration, which he believes is politically motivated.

He argued that these actions are part of an effort to discredit him and silence critics of President Bola Tinubu’s government.

He declared his political stance by saying: “In Nigeria today, there are two lines: those with Bola Tinubu and his government, and those with the people of Nigeria. We chose to stand with the people.”

He also criticized the All Progressives Congress (APC), referencing the cliché: “Once you join the APC, whatever your sins, they are forgiven.”

Tambuwal concluded by vowing to remain steadfast, stating: “I cannot be intimidated. I cannot be blackmailed. No one can tarnish my record.”
