Ex-Minister Murillo Arrested On Corruption Charges

Former Bolivian cabinet minister Arturo Murillo was arrested upon his arrival in Santa Cruz, Bolivia, on Thursday.

The arrest was made just after he was deported from the United States, where he had served a sentence for “money laundering.”

Murillo, 61, was sentenced in the U.S. for laundering bribes he received from a U.S. company in exchange for helping it win a “tear gas” contract in Bolivia. Following his early release, a U.S. immigration judge ordered his deportation.

Bolivian government minister Roberto Rios had previously stated that authorities would execute two local “arrest warrants” upon Murillo’s arrival.

Murillo now faces multiple charges in Bolivia, including a sentence of “eight years in prison” he received in absentia for “overpriced tear gas purchases,” and another sentence “exceeding five years” in a case related to the import of “riot control equipment.”

A U.S. court also ordered him to pay Bolivia “$6.2 million” for the scheme.

Murillo served as interior minister in the interim government of Jeanine Anez, who took over Bolivia’s government in 2019 after the ouster of Evo Morales.
