Simon Ekpa’s Loyalists React As Finnish Court Sentences Him To Six Years In Prison For Terrorism

The Biafra Republic Government in Exile (BRGIE), a group of loyalists of pro-Biafra agitator Simon Ekpa, has vowed to “appeal the six-year prison sentence” he was handed by a Finnish court.

According to a statement from the acting Prime Minister of the BRGIE, Ogechukwu Nkere, the judgment was “biased and politically motivated,” influenced by “pressure from the Nigerian government.”

Ekpa was sentenced on September 1, 2025, after being found guilty of “terrorism-related offences, aggravated tax fraud, and breaching Finland’s Lawyers Act.”

The court determined that he used social media to “incite crimes with terrorist intent” in Nigeria’s South-East.

Nkere rejected the verdict, claiming the conviction was for Ekpa’s online advocacy for Biafran independence.

He argued that the court’s finding that Ekpa supplied weapons and ammunition was “unsubstantiated” and a reflection of Nigeria’s “lobbying efforts.”

Nkere stated, “Where in this 21st century has a call for Biafran independence become a terrorist act?”

He also added that Finland’s claim was “unsubstantiated and reflects political pressure from the Nigerian government.”

The group announced it will “intensify international lobbying efforts” to draw attention to the Biafran cause and urged its members to remain “steadfast.”
