Tyler Robinson, a 22-year-old, is “in custody as the suspect in the fatal shooting of conservative activist Charlie Kirk.”
Although Robinson was a registered voter with “no party affiliation” who hadn’t cast a ballot in the two most recent elections, Utah Governor Spencer Cox stated at a press conference on Friday morning that a family member told investigators that Robinson “had become more political in recent years,” and had “lashed out at Kirk.”
Authorities, who have described Kirk’s killing as a “political assassination,” discovered a rifle near the site of the shooting with anti-fascist messages engraved on ammunition, which hinted at Robinson’s political transformation.

Those messages included one that said, “Hey fascist! Catch!” and another that appeared to reference an Italian anti-fascist song, reading, “Oh bella ciao, bella ciao, bella ciao, ciao ciao.”
Other engravings hinted at online trolling, including one that said, “If you read this, you are gay LMAO.”
The family member also told investigators that at a recent family dinner, “they talked about why they didn’t like him and the viewpoints that he had,” and “The family member also stated Kirk was full of hate and spreading hate.”
Robinson was taken into custody around 10 p.m. on Thursday night after a 33-hour manhunt.
According to Governor Cox, a family member had reached out to a friend who then told authorities that “Robinson had confessed to them or implied that he had committed the incident.”
According to public records, social media, and a university statement, Robinson grew up in Washington, Utah, and received a “resident presidential scholarship” to attend Utah State University, but he “briefly attended Utah State University for one semester in 2021” before dropping out.
Social media photos show him wearing clothing and accessories similar to those worn by the suspect in images released by law enforcement.
