Ifeanyi Ubah: List Of Federal Lawmakers Who Died After 2023 Elections

The National Assembly has been thrown into mourning following the death of Senator Ifeanyi Ubah, representing Anambra South Senatorial District.

Ubah reportedly died in the United Kingdom on Saturday at the age of 52. He is the sixth federal lawmaker to pass away since the 2023 general elections.

According to sources, Ubah traveled to the UK a few weeks ago for medical treatment, but his health condition reportedly became critical. The exact cause of his death has not been confirmed.

Ubah was first elected to the Senate in 2019 on the platform of the Young Progressive Party (YPP) and was re-elected in 2023. He defected to the All Progressives Congress (APC) earlier this year and was planning to run for the Anambra State governorship in the 2025 off-cycle election. He had previously contested the 2021 Anambra governorship poll but lost to Professor Chukwuma Soludo of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA).

Ekene Adams
Barely two weeks ago, the House of Representatives lost a member representing Chikun/Kajuru Federal Constituency of Kaduna State, Rep. Ekene Abubakar Adams. He reportedly battled ill-health in the months leading to his death. According to a statement by House Spokesperson Rep. Akin Rotimi Jr, Adams died early Tuesday, July 16, at the age of 39. Adams was a dedicated public servant, passionate sports administrator, and kind philanthropist who chaired the House Committee on Sports.

Olaide Akinremi
About a week before Adams’ death, the House of Representatives lost a member representing Ibadan North Federal Constituency of Oyo State under the platform of the APC, Rep. Olaide Adewale Akinremi. His death was announced in a statement on Wednesday, July 10, by House Spokesperson Rotimi Jr. Akinremi died after a brief illness at the age of 51. He was a distinguished member of the 10th Assembly and served as Chairman of the House Committee on Science Research Institutions.

Isa Dogonyaro
On May 10, 2024, Rep. Isa Dogonyaro, representing Garki/Babura Federal Constituency of Jigawa State, passed away. His colleague, Mohammed Bello El-Rufa’i, announced Dogonyaro’s death on his Facebook wall. The Deputy House Spokesperson, Phillip Agbese, mentioned that Dogonyaro’s funeral prayer was scheduled in Abuja.

Abdulkadir Danbuga
On October 11, 2023, Rep. Abdulkadir Jelani Danbuga, representing Isa-Sabon Birni Federal Constituency on the platform of the APC, died after a brief illness. His colleague, Aminu Almustapha (aka Boza), confirmed his death.

Ismaila Maihanci
Ismaila Maihanci, who won the seat to represent Jalingo/Yorro/Zing Federal Constituency in Taraba State, died on April 22, 2023, at the age of 36. He was elected under the platform of the PDP and had served as a Special Adviser to the Taraba State Governor and as the Secretary of the PDP in Taraba State.
