Eyewitness Speaks As ARISE News Anchor Somtochukwu Maduagwu Killed During Armed Robbery In Abuja

Daredevil armed robbers killed ARISE News TV Broadcaster, Somtochukwu Christelle Maduagwu, and others in the Katampe area of Abuja yesterday.

The tragic incident occurred in the early hours of Monday, September 29, 2025, and is currently under investigation by the Nigeria Police Force.

Although details remain sketchy, an eyewitness who lives in the same block said he was the first victim to be attacked.

The witness expressed his sadness on social media platform X, stating: This happened at the block i live in. I was the first victim to be attacked. Right in the heart of Abuja, man.

“I don’t wish anyone to witness the things I saw. When I’m ready, I’ll share details. For now may the souls of the departed find peace.”

Meanwhile, the management and staff of ARISE News Channel announced the untimely death of Maduagwu, describing her as one of their “brightest talents.”

Born on December 26, 1995, Maduagwu, fondly known as Sommie, was just 29 years old.

She had established herself as a “dynamic news anchor, reporter, and producer” known for her “professionalism and captivating on-screen presence.”

Beyond journalism, Sommie was a trained lawyer who brought sharp analytical skills and a “passion for justice” into her reporting.

Colleagues described her as a “dedicated professional, a supportive teammate, and a cherished friend whose warmth left an indelible mark on all who knew her.”

In a statement, ARISE News described her passing as a “devastating loss,” stating: “Somtochukwu was not only a cherished member of our ARISE family but also a vibrant voice who inspired, informed, and connected with viewers. Her voice is now silent, but her spirit, passion, and legacy will endure in our collective memory.”

The channel extended condolences to her parents, siblings, extended family, friends, and loved ones, while calling for justice, adding: “We remain in shock and call for a speedy investigation, apprehension, and prosecution of the culprits.”

Her death has sent waves of grief across Nigeria’s media industry, with tributes pouring in for her “fearless storytelling and commitment to truth.”

Her legacy as both a journalist and lawyer “will be remembered as one that blended intellect, courage, and humanity.”
