Senator Kelvin Chukwu Dumps Labour Party For APC

Senator Kelvin Chukwu, representing Enugu East, on Tuesday dumped the Labour Party (LP) for the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

Senator Godswill Akpabio, the President of the Senate, announced Senator Chukwu’s defection at plenary.

The Senator cited the “collapse of internal democracy” and the “tattered nature of the LP” as his reasons for cross-carpeting.

In his remarks, Akpabio congratulated Chukwu, but stated that Nigeria will not be a one-party state as the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) will register more parties.

Following this development, the party composition in the Senate is now:

  • APC: 73
  • PDP: 28
  • LP: 4
  • NNPP: 1
  • SDP: 1
  • APGA: 2

This brings the total number of Senators to 109.
