Police Redeploy Abuja DPO Caught Slapping Man In Viral Video

The Commissioner of Police for the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Miller Dantawaye, has ordered the immediate redeployment of the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) in charge of the Ushafa Division.

This decision follows a viral video that surfaced on X (formerly Twitter) on Tuesday, showing the officer slapping a young man during an arrest.

The incident drew “widespread criticism” from Nigerians who condemned the act as abusive and unprofessional.

In a statement released on Wednesday, the Police Public Relations Officer for the FCT Command, SP Josephine Adeh, confirmed the Commissioner of Police (CP) found the officer’s action “unacceptable and contrary to the ethics of the Nigeria Police Force.”

The statement read, “The Commissioner of Police strongly condemns the officer’s actions, which fall short of the high standards of discipline, civility, and professionalism expected of police officers.”

Adeh confirmed that the officer has been redeployed to the headquarters pending the outcome of an ongoing investigation, stating, “Consequently, the officer has been redeployed, and the situation is currently under investigation.”

The CP used the opportunity to warn all Divisional Police Officers and their subordinates to maintain professionalism and courtesy while on duty.

The statement stressed that “any act of misconduct or abuse of power would attract strict disciplinary action.”

The CP’s warning read: “While administrative disciplinary steps are being taken, CP Dantawaye reminds all DPOs and their subordinates that they must remain professional, courteous, and law-abiding in the discharge of their duties. He warns that any act of misconduct or abuse of power will attract severe sanctions.”

The police chief also urged FCT residents to foster “mutual respect and cooperation” with law enforcement officers to bolster community policing efforts, stating, “Mutual respect and cooperation are essential for effective community policing and public safety.” The FCT Police Command encouraged residents to report both suspicious activities and misconduct.
