Nnamdi Kanu Defends Self In Court As Lawyers Withdraw From Trial

The leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, appeared before the Federal High Court in Abuja on Thursday to begin his defence in the terrorism case filed against him by the Federal Government.

The trial is being handled by Justice James Omotosho.

When the case was called, Kanu’s lead counsel, Kanu Agabi (SAN), informed the court that he and other Senior Advocates of Nigeria on the defence team were withdrawing from the case.

Those who also withdrew included Onyechi Ikpeazu (SAN), Joseph Akubo (SAN), Paul Erokoro (SAN), Emeka Etiaba (SAN), and one other.

After Kanu confirmed that he had dismissed his lawyers, Justice Omotosho directed the remaining members of the defence team, except the SANs, to leave the courtroom.

The judge then asked Kanu to proceed with his defence.

Kanu, however, questioned the court’s jurisdiction to continue his trial, but the judge overruled him and ordered him to proceed.

At that point, Ikpeazu intervened, reminding the court that their withdrawal had taken effect earlier that morning and requested that Kanu be given time to compose himself.

The prosecution did not oppose the request, prompting Justice Omotosho to adjourn the case to Friday, October 24, for Kanu to open his defence.
