President Bola Tinubu announced a major shakeup in the command of Nigeria’s armed forces, making several changes to the Service Chiefs hierarchy.
This development, which the President’s administration views as being “in furtherance of the efforts of the Federal Government of Nigeria to strengthen the national security architecture,” was detailed in a statement released on Friday by Sunday Dare, Special Adviser to the President on Media & Public Communication.
- Chief of Defence Staff (CDS): General Olufemi Oluyede was appointed, replacing General Christopher Musa.
- Chief of Army Staff (COAS): Major-General W. Shaibu was named to this position.
- Chief of Air Staff (CAS): Air Vice Marshall S.K Aneke was appointed.
- Chief of Naval Staff (CNS): Rear Admiral I. Abbas was named to the post.
- Chief of Defence Intelligence (CDI): Major-General E.A.P Undiendeye retained his position.
All of these new appointments were noted to “take immediate effect,” according to the statement.
In concluding the announcement, the Special Adviser conveyed that “The President, Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, expresses most profound appreciation to the outgoing Chief of Defence Staff, General Christopher Musa and the other Service Chiefs for their patriotic service, and dedicated leadership.”
Furthermore, the President issued a direct mandate to the new military heads, charging them “to justify the confidence reposed in them to further enhance the professionalism, vigilance and comradeship that define the Armed Forces of Nigeria,” the statement “said in part.”
