The Nigeria Police Force (NPF) has announced that the enforcement of the tinted glass permit policy is scheduled to resume on January 2, 2026.
Force spokesperson Benjamin Hundeyin stated that the decision follows a comprehensive review of emerging security threats and a noticeable increase in crimes—including kidnapping and armed robbery—perpetrated by individuals using vehicles with unauthorized tinted windows to hide their identities.
While the police had voluntarily suspended enforcement in October to allow motorists time to regularize their documents and out of respect for ongoing legal discussions with the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), they clarified that no court order currently prevents them from upholding the law.

The NPF emphasized that the suspension was a gesture of consideration for citizens, but the recent exploitation of this “gap” by criminal groups has made a return to enforcement a priority for public safety.
The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, has assured the public that the upcoming exercise will be conducted professionally and in strict accordance with the law.
Motorists who require tinted glass are encouraged to apply through the official digital platform launched in April 2025, which handles the processing of annual permits for a stipulated fee.

The policy remains a point of contention with the NBA, which initiated legal action in September, labeling the permit requirement illegal.
The association argues that the policy violates citizens’ rights and questions the validity of the Motor Tinted Glass (Prohibition) Act of 1991, a military-era decree.
Despite these legal challenges, the Force maintains its commitment to enforcing the regulations with fairness and transparency while collaborating with stakeholders in the justice system.
