I Told Him No Sir – Makinde Reveals Tinubu’s Request He Turned Down

In a revealing media chat held in Ibadan on Tuesday, Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State disclosed that he turned down a direct request from President Bola Tinubu to oversee the All Progressives Congress (APC) operations within his state.

The Governor explained that the encounter occurred during discussions regarding ministerial nominations for Oyo State.

According to Makinde, the President made a personal appeal for his assistance in managing the ruling party’s local structure.

“He said ‘Seyi, it’s you that I want to help me organise APC in Oyo State,” Makinde revealed.

Despite the high-level nature of the request, Makinde stated that he rejected the offer immediately to maintain his integrity within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

He recounted his firm response to the President: “I told him ‘no sir, I cannot help you organise APC in Oyo State because I am of the PDP’.”

The Governor further shared details of a separate meeting involving himself, the President, and the FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike.

He claimed that during this session, which was also attended by the President’s Chief of Staff, Wike made a bold vow to secure the PDP’s support for Tinubu’s 2027 ambitions.

“I was in a meeting with the president and Wike… and Wike said to the president that, ‘well, sir, I will hold PDP for you against 2027’,” Makinde stated.

The Oyo Governor admitted that the comment left him “in shock,” prompting him to confront Wike privately afterward. He recalled asking the Minister on the verandah, “Wike did we agree to this?”

Makinde emphasized that while Wike is entitled to his political leanings, he is determined to prevent Nigeria from becoming a “one party state” and intends to fight for the survival of the opposition.

“The real issue is that Wike would like to support the president for 2027. That’s fine… But also some of us that want to ensure that democracy survives in Nigeria… and we want to ensure that PDP survives. He should also allow us to do our own thing,” he concluded.
