Tinubu Approves Appointment Of Rotimi Oyedepo As Director Of Public Prosecutions

President Bola Tinubu has formally approved the transfer of Rotimi Iseoluwa Oyedepo, SAN, from the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to the Federal Ministry of Justice, where he will serve as the new Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP).

The appointment was confirmed in a letter dated December 23, signed by Omolabake Mafe on behalf of the Federal Civil Service Commission, which noted that the move was made “in the public interest.”

According to a statement from Abiodun Oladunjoye, the Director of Information and Public Relations at the State House, Oyedepo is set to take over from Mr. Abubakar Babadoko, who is retiring on December 31, 2025, after reaching the mandatory eight-year limit for directors.

A 2007 Law graduate from the University of Ilorin, Oyedepo was called to the Bar in 2008 and has spent over 15 years at the EFCC.

During his tenure, he headed the agency’s Monitoring Unit and specialized in tackling high-level economic and financial crimes.

Notably, he was a key member of the legal team that secured victory for Nigeria in the famous Process and Industrial Development (P&ID) case.

In his new role as DPP, Oyedepo is expected to lead the government’s legal strategy and minimize the need for external lawyers in major cases.

“He is expected to deploy his expertise to reduce reliance on external counsel for critical prosecutions and to ensure greater coherence and consistency in the Federal Government’s legal strategies,” the statement added.
