In a major political realignment, the 2023 presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Atiku Abubakar, has officially welcomed Peter Obi into the African Democratic Congress (ADC).
Mr. Obi, who led the Labour Party (LP) in the 2023 polls, finalized his defection to the ADC on Wednesday in Enugu.
This move follows his earlier declaration in 2025 that he intends to run for the presidency again in 2027.

Atiku, who is already a member of the ADC and is also eyeing the party’s 2027 presidential ticket, took to his Facebook page on Wednesday evening to describe the development as a turning point for Nigeria’s political landscape.
He noted that Mr. Obi’s defection to the party “marks a significant moment in the history of political coalition” in Nigeria.
“It is my pleasure to welcome him officially, as we look forward to a robust working relationship that will foster a virile opposition, one that will ultimately form a government capable of bringing prosperity and peace to our people,” Atiku stated.
Referring to the former Anambra State Governor as “my brother and associate,” the former Vice-President expressed optimism that the Enugu declaration would trigger a wave of new members across the South-East.
“And as the ADC coalition train leaves Enugu, the capital of the South-east region, I hope this inspires other patriots to join the cause with the train headed in their direction,” he added.
The reunion of the two politicians in the ADC brings their history full circle; Obi served as Atiku’s running mate under the PDP banner in 2019.
In 2023, they ran separate campaigns against the APC’s Bola Tinubu, subsequently launching a vigorous but unsuccessful joint legal challenge against his victory at the Supreme Court.
With both men now under the same roof, Obi’s move serves as confirmation that he will contend for the ADC’s presidential ticket for the 2027 election.
