In an emotional interview with The Guardian, Ifeoluwa Adeniyi, the 19-year-old son of Adeniyi Mobolaji Kayode, has defended his father’s driving record, insisting that the man has never been charged with reckless driving before.
The younger Adeniyi spoke out as his father was being taken to the Sagamu Correctional Centre to finalize his ₦5 million bail requirements.
Kayode was the driver during the tragic crash on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway that resulted in the deaths of two of Anthony Joshua’s associates.
Ifeoluwa maintained that the accident was caused by a mechanical fault rather than negligence, stating that his father is a cautious driver who has worked with the boxing champion for three years.

“The family is very upset by what happened and we are sorry for the deaths of the two people. Dad is not a fast driver; he was following the speed limit when the brakes failed. He said he was pushing the pedal, but nothing was happening,” Ifeoluwa said.
He further argued that the collision might have been avoided if not for an obstruction on the highway:“It’s not his fault, if the truck wasn’t parked there illegally, this wouldn’t have happened.”
The driver’s legal counsel, Olalekan Abiodun, corroborated the claim of brake failure and revealed a chilling detail about a seat swap that may have saved Anthony Joshua’s life.
According to the lawyer, Joshua was originally sitting in the front passenger seat when the journey began in Lagos.
“My client has pleaded not guilty, and what happened was an accident. I haven’t had a chance to speak with him yet, but I know he says the brakes didn’t work. I also understand that the journey started in Lagos and that initially Anthony had got into the front seat, but the driver asked him to swap seats,” Abiodun explained.
The swap was reportedly made for safety and visibility reasons because of Joshua’s large frame:“He did this because Anthony is a big fellow, and so the driver couldn’t see the wing mirror properly, which was why he asked him to move to the seat behind the driver’s seat. From what I understand, Latif changed seats with Anthony.”
Ifeoluwa confirmed this account, noting that the group was only minutes away from their destination in Sagamu when the crash occurred:“I know that when the journey started in Lagos, Anthony was sitting in the front by the driver, but my dad asked him to sit behind because he was blocking his view. He was taking Anthony to see his family in Sagamu and had picked them up from the airport. They were only a few minutes from arriving.”
