In a move that has further intensified the political friction in Rivers State, the House of Assembly has officially addressed Governor Siminalayi Fubara as “madam” in its formal notice of impeachment.
The development occurred on Thursday as the state parliament initiated removal proceedings against the governor.
The process was triggered after Major Jack, the leader of the assembly, presented charges of gross misconduct signed by 26 lawmakers.
Following the presentation, Speaker Martins Amaewhule announced that the notice would be served on the governor within seven days to comply with legal requirements.
The Speaker then issued the formal correspondence, dated January 8, 2026, which informed Fubara that the allegations were being brought forward under Section 188 of the 1999 Constitution.
However, the document strikingly referred to the male governor as “madam.”
In the letter, the Speaker wrote:“I received a copy of the Notice of allegations of gross misconduct dated 5th January 2026 and brought against you by twenty-six (26) members of the Rivers State House of Assembly.”
The correspondence continued:“Pursuant to section 188 (1) and (2) of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 (as amended), I hereby forward to you a copy of the said Notice of Allegation of Gross Misconduct received by me on the 8th day of January 2026.”
The Speaker’s letter concluded by requesting that the governor provide a formal response to the accusations as dictated by constitutional law.
Notably, the same document was also sent to the Deputy Governor, Ngozi Odu, where the title “madam” was used correctly.
This unconventional labeling of the governor has been widely interpreted as a deliberate sign of disrespect amidst the deepening crisis between the legislative and executive arms of the state.
