The Algerian Football Federation (FAF) has announced that it has formally petitioned both the Confederation of African Football (CAF) and the Fédération Internationale de Football Association (FIFA) regarding the officiating in its AFCON 2025 quarter-final loss to Nigeria.
The announcement, made on Monday through the official X handle of Équipe d’Algérie de football, calls for a thorough investigation into decisions that the federation claims were highly questionable.
In a strongly-worded statement, the FAF expressed its frustration:“The Algerian Football Federation cannot overlook the refereeing decisions in the last match, which raised questions and caused widespread dissatisfaction, as they undermined the credibility of African refereeing and do not serve the image of African football internationally.”

The federation further explained its decision to involve the global governing body, FIFA, alongside CAF:“Accordingly, the Algerian Football Federation has formally contacted CAF and FIFA by submitting an official complaint, accompanied by a request to open an investigation, to clarify what occurred and take appropriate action in accordance with applicable regulations.”
The protest follows the Desert Foxes’ 2-0 exit from the tournament on Saturday, where goals from Victor Osimhen and Akor Adams secured Nigeria’s place in the semi-finals.
The conclusion of the match was marred by controversy, as Algerian players confronted the officiating crew on the pitch. Viral footage also showed scuffles and a thwarted pitch invasion by fans.
Coinciding with the FAF’s petition, CAF confirmed on Monday that it has launched its own probe into “alleged misconduct by players and officials” during the match. The continental body is currently reviewing video evidence and match reports to determine if disciplinary actions are necessary.
Despite the turmoil, the FAF urged its supporters to stay behind the national team, noting that the squad is currently in a “rebuilding phase.”
The federation stressed that the lessons learned from this tournament are vital for their preparation for future competitions, specifically the 2026 World Cup.
