Governor Alex Otti of Abia State has offered a path toward “forgiveness and reintegration into the party” for the deposed national chairman of the Labour Party (LP), Julius Abure, and his associates, provided they are prepared to “embrace peace and reconciliation.”
The Governor’s outreach follows a Federal High Court ruling in Abuja that recognized Nenadi Usman, a former Minister of Finance, as the legitimate national chairperson of the LP.
Presiding Justice Peter Lifu based his decision on a “Supreme Court’s 4 April 2025 verdict” and instructed INEC to treat the Usman-led caretaker committee as “the only valid authority to represent the Labour Party,” until a national convention is held.

The court determined that “Abure’s tenure as national chairman had elapsed” and dismissed his arguments that the dispute was a non-justiciable internal matter.
Justice Lifu instead maintained that the caretaker committee was “a necessity” mandated by the apex court. Despite this, Mr. Abure has “vowed” to challenge the ruling.
In a statement released Thursday by his media aide, Ferdinand Ekeoma, Governor Otti urged “those responsible for all the frivolous litigations against the party” to end their legal battles.
He asserted that the High Court’s decision aligns with the Supreme Court, promising those involved “forgiveness and proper reintegration as long as they are willing to turn a new leaf and become law-abiding members of the party”.
Congratulating the Usman-led committee, the Governor described the legal outcome as “heartwarming and timely,” stating it offers a chance to ensure “peace, order and unity return to the party.”
He further noted that the ruling facilitates the “re-organisation and rejuvenation of the party to become, not just a truly democratic party that meets the high expectations of its members, but a formidable political platform that is poised to achieving electoral victories and rendering good governance at all levels.”
Otti, who was recently named the LP’s national leader following Peter Obi’s move to the African Democratic Congress, expressed his gratitude to the court for the “sound judgement” and to “all lovers of democracy” for their support.
He reaffirmed his intent to stay and rebuild the LP rather than defecting.
