President Bola Tinubu has formally reached out to the Senate to request the confirmation of Retired Admiral Jamila Abubakar Sadiq as a National Commissioner for the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
If confirmed, she will serve as the representative for Adamawa State.
The President’s proposal was conveyed through a letter to Senate President Godswill Akpabio, which was presented during Tuesday’s plenary session.
In the correspondence, Tinubu noted that the appointment was made “In compliance with the provisions of section 154 of section 1 of the constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria 1999 as amended.”

He further expressed his desire for a swift approval process, stating, “While I hope that the senate will consider and confirm the nominee expeditiously, please accept, the Senate President, the assurances of my highest consideration.”
Upon receiving the letter, Senate President Akpabio directed the request to the Senate Committee on INEC.
The committee has been instructed to conduct the necessary legislative reviews and present a formal report within one week.
In a concurrent move, President Tinubu submitted a separate letter seeking the Senate’s approval for Ismail Yusuf to be appointed as the Chairman of the National Hajj Commission of Nigeria (NAHCON).
The President clarified that this request follows the “provisions of section 3(2) of the NAHCON Act, 2026.”
Reiterating his call for a prompt confirmation, Tinubu wrote, “While it is my hope that the senate will consider and confirm the appointment expeditiously, please accept, Mr Senate President and distinguished Senators, the assurances of my highest regards.”
Following the established protocol, Akpabio referred this second request to the Senate Committee on Rules and Business. Like the INEC nomination, the committee is expected to provide its feedback to the plenary in one week.
