President Bola Tinubu has issued a mandatory directive requiring all political appointees intending to contest elective positions in the 2027 general elections to resign their current roles by March 31, 2026.
This order affects a wide range of officials, including Ministers, Ministers of State, Special Advisers, Directors-General, and CEOs of all federal agencies and government-owned companies.
The directive, communicated via a circular from the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF) and signed by Senator George Akume, aligns with Section 88(1) of the Electoral Act, 2026, and the recently released INEC timetable. According to the circular, “President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has directed all political appointees under his administration who intend to contest elective offices in the forthcoming 2027 general elections to resign their appointments on or before March 31, 2026.”

This applies to any appointee seeking to participate in party primaries or secure a nomination for any elective office.
President Tinubu emphasized that this measure is crucial for maintaining the integrity of the democratic process.
The circular noted that the President believes “the measure is necessary to ensure full compliance with electoral laws, uphold transparency in the political process, and promote a level playing field for all aspirants ahead of the elections.”
He further urged strict adherence to the timeline to prevent any abuse of office and to ensure fairness as the nation prepares for the 2027 polls.
All affected officials must submit their formal resignation letters through the SGF’s office no later than the month-end deadline.
This move reaffirms the administration’s stated commitment to “strengthening democratic institutions and promoting credible electoral processes in Nigeria.”
