On Thursday, a South African court handed a five-year prison sentence to Julius Malema, the leader of the radical left-wing Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF), for an incident involving an assault rifle at a 2018 rally.

As the sentencing unfolded in this high-profile case, hundreds of Malema’s supporters, dressed in the party’s signature red, congregated outside the courthouse.

In delivering the judgment, Magistrate Twanet Olivier stated that Malema had intentionally broken firearm regulations by discharging a weapon into the air during an EFF anniversary event eight years ago.
