Governor Dapo Abiodun of Ogun State has authorized a new relief package for public servants, which includes a one-day weekly off-duty schedule and a monthly ₦10,000 transport subsidy for a duration of three months, starting immediately.
State Head of Service, Kehinde Onasanya, announced the move in a statement, explaining that the palliatives are intended to cushion the effects of high fuel prices and the rising cost of living on government employees.
“The gesture of government is aimed at further easing the burden on the workforce, who now face increased challenges commuting to work,” Onasanya stated.
The initiative is designed to boost morale and productivity by reducing the financial strain on workers.
However, those performing essential services—such as healthcare workers, teachers, security staff, and senior administrative officers—are excluded from the weekly day-off to ensure government operations continue smoothly.
Despite this, these essential workers will still receive the ₦10,000 monthly transport allowance.
Regarding the logistics of the new schedule, Onasanya noted, “Arrangements as to the specific day each eligible public servant will observe as the off-duty day shall be determined by the accounting officers of respective ministries, departments and agencies in a manner that ensures that service delivery is not compromised.”
The Head of Service praised the governor for the intervention, saying, “This measure, which reflects the commitment of government to the welfare and well-being of its workforce, will bring relief to workers.”
He further called on the state’s workforce to show their appreciation through increased discipline and improved performance in their duties.
