Moscow has alleged that Ukrainian forces crossed into its Kursk region, marking a significant escalation in the conflict.
Russian officials, including the defense ministry, investigative committee, and children’s ombudsman, claimed a “massive attack” targeting border defenses on Tuesday.
President Vladimir Putin described the incident as a “large-scale provocation,” accusing Ukraine of indiscriminate shelling of civilian areas, including residential buildings and ambulances.
Ukrainian authorities did not comment on the claims.
The extent of the alleged Ukrainian incursion remains unclear. Russian authorities have not provided concrete evidence of Ukrainian troops occupying settlements or damaging critical infrastructure. It’s also uncertain if any Ukrainian soldiers remain in Russian territory.

The reported attack centered around the town of Sudzha, located near the border. Russian officials claimed a combined land and air assault. While the town’s mayor described a tense situation and evacuations, available video footage does not confirm Ukrainian control.

Amidst ongoing clashes along the border, the acting governor of Russia’s Kursk region, Alexei Smirnov, declared a state of emergency on August 7th. He cited the “difficult operational situation” and the need to address the consequences of Ukrainian forces entering the region.
The Russian Defense Ministry reported a Ukrainian attack involving around 300 troops and armored vehicles near the villages of Nikolayevo-Daryino and Oleshnya. While initially claiming to have repelled the assault, the ministry later acknowledged ongoing fighting and ongoing fire damage to Ukrainian forces.
Russia’s Chief of General Staff, Valery Gerasimov, subsequently informed President Putin that Ukrainian forces had been stopped from advancing further into Russian territory.
Thousands of residents fled the Kursk region in the past 24 hours, according to regional head Aleksey Smirnov. Concurrently, Russia’s National Guard boosted security measures at the Kursk nuclear power plant, located approximately 50 kilometers from the intense fighting near Sudzha.
