President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved the appointment of Modupe Adeola Adelabu as the Chairman of the Governing Board of the National Examinations Council (NECO).
This decision, announced on Wednesday through a statement by the President’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, is intended to bolster leadership within the nation’s education sector.
Adelabu, a retired professor of Educational Administration from Obafemi Awolowo University, possesses extensive experience in both academia and high-level public service.
Her background includes serving as the Deputy Governor of Ekiti State and as the former Chairperson of the National Board for Technical Education (NBTE) from 2018 to 2021.

According to the Presidency, her appointment is part of a wider initiative aimed at “improving governance, continuity, and institutional reforms” within key agencies.
While Adelabu takes the helm of the board, the current NECO Registrar, Ibrahim Dantani Wushishi, will remain in his position to ensure “operational stability within the examination body.”
The President also authorized several other key appointments and renewals across the sector:

Babatunde Salako was named the new Chairman of the NBTE.

Idris M. Bugaje was reappointed as the Executive Secretary of the NBTE for a “second and final five-year term.”

Bongfa Binfa was appointed as the Rector of the Federal Polytechnic, N’yak-Shendam, in Plateau State.

Chinwe Veronica Anunobi saw her tenure renewed as the Director-General of the National Library of Nigeria.
Adelabu’s career is marked by her rise from a Graduate Assistant to a full Professor before her retirement in 2020.
She has previously served as the Chairman of the Ekiti State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB) and has worked as a consultant for various education agencies.
Industry analysts believe these leadership choices represent a “renewed effort to stabilise and reposition key education institutions in Nigeria.”
