Former Botswana President Festus Mogae has passed away at the age of 86.
His death was officially announced by the country’s current President, Duma Boko, during a national address, where he noted that the former leader died following a period of ill health.
“Botswana mourns a distinguished statesman and patriot whose life was devoted to the service of his country,” President Boko stated.
The government had previously confirmed last month that Mogae was undergoing medical treatment at a facility in Gaborone, though the specific nature of his ailment was kept private.
Serving as Botswana’s third president from 1998 to 2008, Mogae was celebrated globally for his excellence in economic management and governance.
He was particularly lauded for his aggressive response to the HIV/AIDS crisis, launching a pioneering antiretroviral treatment program that saved countless lives.
Beyond his national service, Mogae held a significant connection to Nigeria through his role as the chairman of the Selection Committee for the Daily Trust African of the Year Award, a position he took over in 2016.
Tributes have continued to pour in, with President Boko describing him as a disciplined leader who prioritised national development.
“Under his leadership, Botswana earned its international respect for principled governance,” Boko added.
In honor of the late statesman, the government has declared three days of national mourning, during which national flags will fly at half-mast.
Before his presidency, Mogae also served as the nation’s Minister of Finance and Vice-President, cementing his legacy as a pillar of Botswana’s stability and growth.
