Following the announcement by United States President Donald Trump that American forces, in collaboration with the Nigerian military, have eliminated Abu-Bilal al-Minuki, many are asking questions about the identity of the high-ranking terrorist operative.
Al-Minuki, who was also known by the alias Abu Bakr ibn Muhammad ibn Ali al-Mainuki, served as the global second-in-command of ISIS.
President Trump broke the news on Friday (local time) via his Truth Social platform, stating:“Tonight, at my direction, brave American forces and the Armed Forces of Nigeria flawlessly executed a meticulously planned and very complex mission to eliminate the most active terrorist in the world from the battlefield. Abu-Bilal al-Minuki, second in command of ISIS globally, thought he could hide in Africa, but little did he know we had sources who kept us informed on what he was doing,” Trump wrote.
Trump, who has previously accused Nigeria of failing to protect Christians from Islamist militants in the northwest, extended his gratitude to the local authorities for their cooperation.
“Thank you to the Government of Nigeria for your partnership on this operation,” he noted.
Nigeria has consistently denied allegations of religious discrimination, maintaining that its security forces target armed groups that attack both Christians and Muslims alike.
According to a detailed report by the Counter Extremism Project, Abu-Bilal al-Minuki was a Nigerian national who operated primarily within the Sahel region of Africa—a vast, semi-arid transitional zone stretching 5,900 kilometers across the continent, separating the Sahara Desert from the humid savannas.
The region covers core nations including Senegal, Mauritania, Mali, Burkina Faso, Niger, Nigeria, Chad, and Sudan.
Al-Minuki functioned as a senior commander for the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP).
The report added that he specifically directed operations for the Lake Chad division of ISIS’s General Directorate of Provinces (GDP).
Due to his prominent role in channeling international funding and providing strategic guidance to various terror cells, the US State Department officially designated al-Minuki as a Specially Designated Global Terrorist (SDGT) back in June 2023 under the Joe Biden administration.
During that designation, he was identified as an ISIS leader operating under multiple alternative aliases, including Abubakar Mainok and Abor Mainok.
The State Department’s declaration ensured that individuals associated with him were subject to strict sanctions due to their roles in supporting the global operations of the terrorist group.
