Serious tension broke out in the Ungogo Local Government Area of Kano State on Monday when an angry crowd allegedly burned campaign materials belonging to the presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, and his running mate, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso.

A viral social media video captured the moments a group of youths set fire to the banners displaying the faces of both politicians amidst loud chants and chaotic scenes.

The political violence hit home for the local leadership as the NDC chairman for Ungogo Local Government Area, Bilyaminu Bachirawa, was reportedly pulled off a moving motorcycle by the hostile crowd.

Reports indicate that Bachirawa narrowly evaded a lynching as the aggressive youths chased after the bike, shouting and trying to assault him.

What sparked the aggressive confrontation remains unknown at this moment.

This troubling incident unfolded just two days after the NDC officially presented Obi as its presidential candidate for the 2027 general elections.

The political platform had announced Obi as its flagbearer on Saturday night, and immediately after picking up the ticket, the former Anambra State governor named the influential former Kano State governor, Kwankwaso, as his running mate.

Both Obi and Kwankwaso recently moved over to the NDC from the African Democratic Congress (ADC), following deep internal rifts and long-running legal battles within their previous party.

The clash in Kano underscores the rising political temperature as the country prepares for the 2027 polls, especially in key battleground states that will decide the presidency.

As of press time, attempts to get official statements from the Kano State Police Command and the state’s NDC leaders have not yielded results.

No injuries or deaths have been confirmed so far, and security forces have not yet released a formal statement regarding the incident.
