Former Kano State Governor Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso has reportedly threatened to sever ties with the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) following the party’s decision to substitute multiple candidates from his Kwankwasiyya faction in Kano, a move aimed at enforcing a pre-arranged 60/40 power-sharing ratio that guarantees his faction a 60% stake.
The NDC carried out the replacement of several candidates initially presented by the Kwankwasiyya faction in Kano State due to a purported violation of the power-sharing pact.
This detail emerged from a report which reviewed an official document bearing the signature of the Kano State NDC Chairman, Hon. Hussaini Isah Mairiga.
Mairiga clarified that the adjustments were implemented to align with the prior understanding regarding the allocation of party roles and elective slots between the original NDC establishment and the incoming Kwankwasiyya group.
Duplicates of the document were sent to the National Leader of the opposition party, Senator Seriake Dickson, alongside Kwankwaso and the NDC North-West Zonal Chairman.
Based on the updated list, the political party cleared the following individuals for various Federal Constituencies: Barrister Isma’il Idris Sani for Kumbotso; Nasiru Ali Ahmed for Nassarawa; Kabiru Ishaq Sa’id for Kano Municipal; Barrister Dayyabu Jamilu Ibrahim for Doguwa/Tudun Wada; Muhammad Hamisu Abubakar for Dawakin Tofa/Rimin Gado/Tofa; Ibrahim Bashir Bango for Sumaila/Takai; and Abdulmajid Isa Umar Mairigar Fata for Gwale.

Furthermore, modifications were extended to the Kano State House of Assembly tickets across the Ungogo, Dala, Tarauni, Kumbotso, and Dawakin Kudu state constituencies.
The NDC maintained that a binding agreement existed to distribute elective opportunities and party administrative offices using a 60-40 framework, giving the Kwankwasiyya faction 60% while leaving the founding party network with 40%.
Amidst these internal frictions, the Presidential candidate of the NDC, Peter Obi, had on May 31 formally selected Kwankwaso to be his Vice Presidential running mate for the 2027 general elections.
That declaration solidified a major political restructuring ahead of the voting window, setting up both prominent leaders to fly the party’s presidential flag in the forthcoming polls.
With this partnership locked in, Obi and Kwankwaso are anticipated to spearhead the NDC’s nationwide campaign for the 2027 contest, merging two powerful political groups that command extensive support networks across the country.
This alliance stands out as one of the most prominent opposition coalitions ahead of the next voting cycle, completely altering early projections for the 2027 presidential race.
