Obi Reacts As Tinubu Asks Governors To Stop Building Unnecessary Flyovers

Peter Obi, the presidential candidate of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), has voiced support for President Bola Tinubu’s recent warning against building unneeded flyovers, pressing administrations at all tiers to emphasize fixing current infrastructure instead of starting expensive fresh undertakings.

In a Saturday release, Obi mentioned that he has continuously pushed for finishing and upgrading current public facilities prior to starting new ones, contending that limited government funds ought to be channeled toward projects delivering maximum public benefit.

He observed that President Tinubu’s stance mirrors a philosophy he has long promoted, emphasizing that authorities must concentrate on initiatives serving citizens’ urgent requirements instead of chasing vanity projects.

“The President is, in essence, saying what I have always maintained: government must prioritise projects that directly address the immediate needs of the people,” Obi said.

Nevertheless, the former governor of Anambra State challenged the federal administration to practice this very policy within its own infrastructure plans, cautioning against what he characterized as impractical white-elephant ventures while essential national infrastructure keeps degrading.

He pointed out that numerous federal roads connecting trade centers and agricultural zones have transformed into hazardous routes, rendering their restoration far more pressing than undertaking costly initiatives carrying minimal immediate utility.

Obi stated that Nigeria’s tight budget environment necessitates careful resource distribution, asserting that finishing stalled and ongoing works yields superior worth compared to kicking off novel programs that risk remaining incomplete.

Looking back at his time leading Anambra State, he noted that his government intentionally finalized functional projects left by past administrations prior to starting fresh ones.

He argued that governance represents an ongoing process and that genuine leadership is measured not by starting endeavors, but by making sure they reach completion and benefit the populace.

“Leadership is about making the right choices: fixing what is broken, completing what has already been started, and investing limited public resources where they will have the greatest impact on the greatest number of people,” Obi stated.
