The leadership of the Peoples Democratic Party aligned with the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has declared that the official publication of its presidential candidate by the Independent National Electoral Commission has put an end to months of doubt surrounding the party’s participation in the 2027 general election.
Speaking through its National Publicity Secretary, Jungudo Mohammed, the faction stated that the inclusion of Senator Sandy Ojang Onor and his running mate, Babangida Umar, on the electoral body’s final list marks a major milestone.
Highlighting the significance of the event, the party noted in its statement: “Of particular significance is the publication of the names of our presidential candidate, Distinguished Senator Sandy Ojang Onor, and his running mate, Alhaji Babangida Umar, who will proudly fly the flag of our great party in the 2027 presidential election.”
The faction asserted that the development firmly dismisses sustained propaganda and false claims from critics who previously predicted the opposition would fail to field a candidate due to internal disputes.
The party’s statement further read:“This development has effectively laid to rest the sustained misinformation and propaganda by those who desperately sought to convince Nigerians that the PDP would not field a presidential candidate. For months, these unfounded claims were deployed as a campaign tool to mislead Nigerians, discourage our supporters and create doubts about the future of our party. Today, the facts have prevailed, the law has taken its course, and the PDP has once again been vindicated.”
Expressing gratitude to steadfast members and diaspora supporters, the Wike-backed PDP also commended INEC, security agencies, and the judiciary for upholding constitutional order.
Furthermore, the party extended an olive branch to aggrieved members, encouraging them to return as unity remains vital for political recovery.
This development deals a significant setback to the rival faction led by former Minister Tanimu Turaki, which had earlier adopted former President Goodluck Jonathan as its presidential candidate and claimed to have manually submitted his name to the electoral commission following difficulties with the electronic portal.
