Authorities in Lagos State have taken a suspect into custody for vandalizing a protective concrete barrier put in place to stop pedestrians from illegally crossing the expressway at the Kosofe Bus Stop near Mile 12 along Ikorodu Road.
Tokunbo Wahab, the state Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, shared the update via an official statement on X on Saturday, explaining that the apprehension resulted from tracking and enforcement patrols conducted a day prior.
Wahab stated that the individual was caught in the act of pulling out steel reinforcements, iron rods, cables, and other essential building materials meant to keep the concrete divider sturdy and functional.
“During monitoring and enforcement operations yesterday, our team apprehended a suspect at Kosofe Bus Stop, Mile 12, along the Ikorodu Road, for vandalising a concrete barrier installed to prevent pedestrians from crossing the expressway at unauthorised points,” he wrote.
The commissioner continued, “The suspect was found deliberately removing iron rods, cables, steel reinforcements, and other critical structural components that contribute to the stability and effectiveness of the concrete barrier.
“The suspect has been arrested and will be prosecuted in accordance with the law. This enforcement action underscores the Lagos State Government’s commitment to protecting public infrastructure and ensuring the safety of all road users and residents”
The detention serves as a segment of continuous initiatives by the Lagos administration to protect public assets from destructive tampering.
Wahab stressed that individuals caught participating in such destructive behavior will be subjected to full legal prosecution.
The incident arrives amid persistent worries regarding the stripping of metal parts from civic properties throughout the region, with officials arguing that these actions weaken safety standards and drain public funds dedicated to infrastructure development.
