Ogogo: Things You Don’t Know About Stage 4 Cancer

The passing of veteran Nollywood actor, Taiwo Hassan, popularly known as Ogogo, after a reported battle with stage 4 cancer has drawn attention to one of the most advanced stages at which cancer can be diagnosed.

Hassan’s daughters, Kira and Haleemah, had earlier disclosed that doctors diagnosed their father with cancer about three weeks before his death. They also appealed to Nigerians to help the family explore possible treatment options.

Kira later announced her father’s death during an Instagram Live session on Sunday, while actor Saidi Balogun also confirmed the death in a social media post.

The circumstances surrounding the actor’s illness have renewed public interest in what a Stage 4 cancer diagnosis means, how advanced cancer is treated and whether such a diagnosis always means that death is imminent.

It is important to note, however, that cancer is not a single disease. There are many types of cancer, and the way they develop, spread and respond to treatment varies considerably. Consequently, the meaning and outlook of Stage 4 cancer can differ from one patient to another.

What is stage 4 cancer?

Stage 4, also called Stage IV, generally refers to cancer that has spread from where it first developed to distant parts of the body. This spread is known as metastasis. According to the National Cancer Institute, Stage IV cancer is the most advanced stage in the standard staging system used for many cancers, though staging varies depending on the specific type of cancer.

Does stage 4 mean the cancer cannot be treated?

Not necessarily. While Stage 4 cancer is often difficult to cure, treatment may still be possible and can sometimes shrink or slow the cancer, relieve symptoms and help patients live longer. Because the exact staging system differs among cancer types, Stage 4 does not mean exactly the same thing for every cancer.
