President Bola Tinubu has mandated Vice President Kashim Shettima to represent him and head Nigeria’s delegation to the 81st Session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) held in New York, United States.
This was contained in an official statement issued on Sunday in Abuja by Mr Stanley Nkwocha, Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Communications (Office of the Vice President).
According to reports from the News Agency of Nigeria, the General Debate for the 81st UNGA will take place between September 22 and 28.
This year’s Assembly will center on the overarching theme, “Restoring trust, managing transformation: A United Nations that delivers for all.”
Nkwocha clarified that Vice President Shettima will present Nigeria’s official national statement during the General Debate.
The address will present Nigeria’s key policy positions and diplomatic priorities regarding critical international matters impacting global peace, national growth, security, economic progress, and bilateral partnerships.
The presidential media aide further revealed that the Vice President will take part in a series of high-level sessions throughout the UNGA summit.
Nkwocha noted that Shettima’s scheduled discussions will center around the Right to Development, climate initiatives, and other core priorities vital to Nigeria and the broader African continent.
Furthermore, Shettima is slated to assemble alongside fellow international heads of state at the formal reception for Delegation Leaders, while also steering bilateral discussions with foreign leaders, representatives of global bodies, and key foreign investors on the sidelines of the UN summit.
“The engagements will provide Nigeria an opportunity to advance President Tinubu’s economic diplomacy, deepen strategic partnerships and strengthen the country’s voice on reform of the global financial architecture, sustainable development, climate finance and multilateral cooperation,” Nkwocha stated.
Upon completing his diplomatic assignments in New York, Vice President Shettima will depart back to Nigeria.
