The retail price of Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG), widely known as cooking gas, has recorded an upward spike across major cities in Nigeria, adding fresh pressure to household budgets already strained by recent energy price shifts.
The price increase follows a sharp surge in depot rates across Lagos and key supply hubs, where major depots, including Navgas, Ardova, and Nipco, raised wholesale prices from ₦1,050 to ₦1,250 per kilogram within a 48-hour window.
In tandem, marketers linked to the Dangote Petroleum Refinery also adjusted their LPG price from ₦1,000 to ₦1,150 per kilogram.
As a result, average retail pump and plant prices across Nigeria have moved from the previous average of ₦1,200 per kg recorded in August to between ₦1,300 and ₦1,600 per kg depending on location and vendor.
Current Retail & Refill Costs Across Cylinder Sizes:
- 3kg Cylinder Refill: Costs between ₦3,900 and ₦4,800 (up from ₦3,600).
- 6kg Cylinder Refill: Costs between ₦7,800 and ₦9,600.
- 12.5kg Cylinder Refill: Now ranges between ₦16,250 and ₦20,000 (averaging around ₦16,800 at major accredited gas plants and hitting up to ₦20,000 at neighborhood retail outlets).
- 50kg Cylinder Refill: Costs between ₦65,000 and ₦80,000 for commercial consumers.
Regional Price Variations:
- Lagos & South-West: Accredited gas plants are retailing at ₦1,300 to ₦1,350/kg, while smaller non-accredited retailers charge between ₦1,400 and ₦1,600/kg.
- Abuja & North-Central: Retail refill rates hover between ₦1,350 and ₦1,500/kg across major urban centers.
- South-East & South-South: Prices average between ₦1,350 and ₦1,550/kg, driven by local logistics costs from coastal depots.
- Northern States: Inter-state transport logistics have pushed retail rates upwards, ranging from ₦1,400 to ₦1,600+/kg.
Key Drivers Behind the September Price Increase:
Industry reports attribute the price surge to a combination of international and domestic market pressures:
- Global Market Volatility: Escalating geopolitical tensions in international energy markets have impacted landed LPG vessel costs, insurance rates, and shipping charges.
- Depot Supply Constraints: Tightening product availability at key Lagos depots forced marketers to compete for limited stock, triggering a 19.05% jump in depot-level prices over 48 hours.
- Logistics and Distribution Charges: Foreign exchange pressures on imported spare parts, alongside high local transportation costs, continue to inflate logistics overheads for retail distributors.
