The National Examinations Council (NECO) has officially released the results of the 2026 Senior School Certificate Examination (SSCE), recording a significant 64.74 percent drop in examination malpractice cases compared to the previous year.
Announcing the performance breakdown on Thursday, NECO Registrar, Prof. Dantani Wushishi, disclosed that a total of 1,378,048 candidates registered for the examination, with 1,371,992 eventually sitting for the papers across the country.
Providing a detailed statistical analysis of the performance, Wushishi revealed that over 58 percent of the candidates secured the mandatory requirements for tertiary education entry.
“Number of candidates with five credits and above, including English language and mathematics 804,948, representing 58. 67%,” Wushishi stated.
“Number of candidates with 5 credits and above irrespective of English language and mathematics was 1,126,118, representing 84.70%,” he added.
Highlighting the Council’s ongoing crackdown on academic fraud, the Registrar noted a drastic reduction in cheating cases, attributing the improvement to the gradual adoption of computer-based testing protocols and stricter monitoring systems.
“Number of candidates involved in examination malpractice in 2026 was 1,496 as against 3,878 in 2025. There was a decrease of 64.74%,” Wushishi said.
Addressing questions regarding rumors of illegal exam centers, the NECO boss distanced the body from any involvement in “miracle centres,” placing responsibility on state authorities and private proprietors.
“We register centres and have criteria for which we register these centres. We don’t know miracle centres because we have only one school and we cannot be associated with miracle centres,” he said.
“If there are miracle centres, it is the state governments that established these miracle centres, or they are privately owned, but NECO does not believe in miracle centres,” he said.
