The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has issued a three-day weather forecast predicting cloudy conditions, widespread thunderstorms, and moderate rainfall across several states from Monday to Wednesday.
In a weather outlook released in Abuja on Sunday, the agency detailed regional weather expectations across the northern, central, and southern belts of the country.
Monday Weather Outlook
For the northern region, NiMet predicted morning patches of clouds, followed by afternoon and evening thunderstorms accompanied by moderate rains across most states.
Cloudy conditions are expected over the North-Central region in the morning hours, with isolated thunderstorms and moderate rainfall anticipated later in the day across the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nasarawa, Benue, Kogi, Niger, and Plateau states.
In the southern region, morning cloudiness will bring chances of light rain to parts of Ebonyi, Enugu, Cross River, and Akwa Ibom states. Intermittent moderate rains are forecast to spread across most parts of the south later on Monday.
Tuesday Weather Forecast
NiMet forecast morning patches of clouds over the North, alongside morning thunderstorms and light rainfall across Borno, Gombe, Bauchi, Yobe, Taraba, and Adamawa states. More widespread thunderstorms and moderate rains are expected later in the day.
The North-Central region will experience morning thunderstorms and light rains over parts of Benue, Kogi, Plateau, and Nasarawa states, progressing to region-wide isolated thunderstorms and moderate rains by afternoon.
Southern states will see cloudy morning skies with light rains in Ebonyi, Cross River, Rivers, and Akwa Ibom states. By afternoon and evening, moderate rainfall and thunderstorms are expected over Ekiti, Osun, Ogun, Ondo, Oyo, Edo, Enugu, Abia, Ebonyi, Imo, Anambra, Lagos, Delta, Bayelsa, Cross River, Akwa Ibom, and Rivers states.
Wednesday Weather Outlook
Patches of clouds will persist over the northern belt on Wednesday morning, with morning thunderstorms and moderate rains over parts of Taraba, Borno, Adamawa, Bauchi, and Gombe states, expanding across the region later in the day.
The North-Central region will experience cloudy skies with light morning rains over Nasarawa and Plateau states, followed by afternoon and evening thunderstorms with moderate rainfall across most states.
In the South, cloudy conditions and intermittent light rains will affect the South-East and coastal belts in the morning, leading to region-wide moderate rainfall by afternoon and evening.
Safety Advisory
NiMet warned that strong winds could precede the predicted thunderstorms and urged members of the public to take precautionary measures:
- Secure loose objects to prevent wind damage.
- Avoid driving during heavy rainfall and disconnect electrical appliances during thunderstorms.
- Stay clear of tall trees to avoid injuries from falling branches.
- Airline operators are advised to obtain airport-specific weather documentation for operational flight planning.
