Nigeria’s campaign to reach the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations has encountered a severe setback following a stunning defeat against Guinea-Bissau.

The Super Eagles—who previously missed out on World Cup qualification after a painful penalty shootout loss to the DR Congo—suffered a 3-0 defeat at the Estadio 24 de Setembro on Tuesday evening.

Franculino Dju opened the scoring in the 15th minute, beating Nigeria goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali with a curling strike.

Mama Balde extended Guinea-Bissau’s advantage shortly after the hour mark with a effort that went in off the post, before Alvaro Djalo added a third deep into stoppage time to lock in a historic victory for the hosts.

Although the loss leaves Nigeria holding second place in their AFCON 2027 qualifying pool—trailing leaders Guinea-Bissau by three points—finishing as runners-up will not guarantee passage to the tournament.

This unique situation arises because Tanzania, who also feature in Group L, have automatically qualified as co-hosts alongside Kenya and Uganda.

Addressing the tournament schedule, CAF noted in an official release: “The competition will begin on Saturday, 19 June 2027, with the opening match. The final will be played on Saturday, 17 July 2027. These dates give the tournament a clear one-month window and allow CAF, the hosts, teams, broadcasters and supporters to plan well in advance. The exact match schedule, venues and kick-off times will be announced later by CAF.”

Because Tanzania secures an automatic spot regardless of group standing, only the highest-ranked team alongside Tanzania in Group L will qualify for AFCON 2027.

Following the defeat in Bissau, Nigeria has virtually zero margin for error.

The Super Eagles likely must secure maximum points from their double-header against Tanzania in November and claim an away victory over Madagascar.

Should Guinea-Bissau match Nigeria’s results, it will force a high-stakes final fixture between both sides in March 2027, where Nigeria may need a victory margin of at least three goals to secure qualification.
