The Nigerian entertainment industry has been thrown into mourning following the passing of Nollywood actor Chijioke “Cjay” Nwokafor.
His colleague, actress Nkechi Blessing, announced the news on Instagram on Wednesday, sharing video clips featuring herself and the late actor.
While Blessing did not state the cause of Cjay’s death, she revealed that she suspended the scheduled release of her new film, “Egusi Ogbono,” in his honor, noting that the late actor was part of the cast.
The actress had initially planned to launch the movie at 5 p.m. on Wednesday, but chose to pull the release after receiving official confirmation of Cjay’s death from the hospital.
Blessing disclosed that she had communicated with Cjay earlier on Wednesday morning shortly before learning of his sudden demise.
“Cjay Nwoke Oma, so this is really the end? Omo we had plans. I spoke to you at 8 a.m. today and a few hours later you are no more with us,” Blessing wrote. “Omo please return if possible because I refuse to type otherwise and this is too much for me to handle.”
As of press time, Cjay’s family and industry associates have yet to release additional information surrounding his passing or share details regarding funeral arrangements.
Cjay launched his acting career in 2021 and went on to appear in multiple feature films before his death.
The Anambra-born actor was known for his roles in productions such as “Larry Cold,” “Mum Overnight,” and “A Day to My Wedding.”
In an interview with Trybe TV on September 21, Cjay reflected on how his debut experience on a movie set inspired him to build a full-time career in acting.
He recalled working alongside filmmaker Ruth Kadiri, noting that observing the professionalism and composure of the cast motivated him to pursue the craft.
The actor also addressed public perceptions of his character, sharing that while people often misjudged him as arrogant, those impressions did not represent his true personality.
Following the news of his death, two Instagram messages Cjay posted on September 12 and September 23 have drawn significant attention from fans and colleagues.
In one update, he wrote: “No pressure, lifestyle cost na you no know.”
In a separate post, he shared: “Life’s too short to be unhappy, live every minute like it’s your last. Live, love, laugh.”
