The Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Kudirat Kekere-Ekun, has formally administered the oath of office to 68 legal practitioners elevated to the rank of Senior Advocate of Nigeria, charging the new silks to maintain high professional ethics and noting that the inner bar is not an immunity against accountability.

The oath-taking ceremony was held on Monday at the Supreme Court complex in Abuja during a special court session organized to usher in the 2026/2027 Legal Year.

The newly inducted Senior Advocates comprise 67 practicing advocates and one legal scholar.

Conferment of the silk rank stands as one of the highest honors within Nigeria’s legal realm, awarded to practitioners and scholars who have shown outstanding skill and leadership in advocacy or legal scholarship.

In her main address to the inductees, the CJN emphasized that the rank carries significant leadership responsibilities, advising them to embody humility, professional dignity, and unwavering ethical standards.

She noted that their elevation should inspire younger lawyers across the bar, underscoring that professional brilliance must always be paired with moral uprightness.

Justice Kekere-Ekun further warned that disciplinary actions taken against senior legal practitioners during the preceding court year serve as a clear message that no legal status shields anyone from professional discipline.

The approval of the 68 recipients was finalized by the Legal Practitioners’ Privileges Committee during its 174th plenary session held in Abuja on July 23, 2026, under the CJN’s leadership.

The committee had directed the candidates to participate in a mandatory pre-swearing-in orientation program and prohibited any public congratulatory advertisements, notices, or media announcements regarding their elevation in accordance with professional rules.

The new Senior Advocates are expected to uphold the tenets of the inner bar and work towards advancing the administration of justice in the country.
