A 46-year-old businessman, Akinbolusere Kayode, popularly known as Tolufe, has reportedly died by suicide in Ondo State after recording a video sharing details of his personal emotional distress and operational setbacks.
Kayode, a prominent local entrepreneur and owner of Esther Estate, died on Thursday inside his private office situated adjacent to a BOVAS petrol station in Igba town, Ondo West Local Government Area.
In the video recording, which quickly circulated across social media platforms, the deceased announced his decision to transfer ownership of his properties to his wife, Esther, and their three children currently residing in Canada.
He maintained throughout the recording that the decision to transfer his assets was completely voluntary, stressing that he was not acting under external coercion or third-party pressure.
The businessman expressed deep appreciation to his wife for remaining supportive throughout his career, reflecting on how she stood by him during his early humble beginnings when he operated as a local barber.
“My wife stood by me when I had nothing and never for once wronged me. She was very supportive when I had nothing, especially when I was working as a barber. I was the one who destroyed everything with carelessness,” Kayode stated in the video.
He further detailed severe technical setbacks affecting his enterprise, explaining how persistent machinery failures on his first and second equipment setups damaged his operations and left him questioning his life path.
Confirming the incident in an official statement issued on Friday, the Ondo State Police Command Spokesperson, Abayomi Jimoh, disclosed that law enforcement officers attached to the Bolorunduro Division responded to the scene after receiving distress calls from local residents.
“The incident was reported following information received from members of the public that the deceased, a resident of Road 7, Housing Estate, Igba, had died in his office located beside BOVAS Petrol Station, Igba Town, at about 1500hrs on the said date,” the police statement read.
The command confirmed that initial findings established that Kayode recorded a farewell video outlining his personal and financial struggles prior to his death.
Jimoh disclosed that police operatives evacuated the businessman’s remains to the State Hospital Morgue for preservation, post-mortem examination, and forensic analysis.
Investigators conducting a search of the immediate surroundings recovered two empty containers suspected to have contained toxic Sniper insecticide from a nearby bush.
“Upon receipt of the information, police operatives attached to Bolorunduro Division visited the scene, where two empty bottles suspected to have contained Sniper insecticide were recovered from nearby bush,” Jimoh added.
“No foul play or visible marks of violence were observed on his body at the time of examination.”
The spokesperson noted that the Ondo State Commissioner of Police, CP Felix Ohagwu, has ordered a comprehensive investigation into the incident to establish the precise circumstances surrounding the businessman’s death.
