Openda equalized in the 57th minute with a shot from a tight angle, and then scored the winner with 10 minutes remaining.

Leipzig’s manager, Marco Rose, was sent off in the first half for protesting against referee Matthias Jollenbeck after a challenge on Openda by Jonathan Tah.

Leverkusen, who had only lost once in the Bundesliga since the final day of the 2022-23 season, saw their unbeaten streak end. Leipzig’s victory also extended their own unbeaten league run to 13 matches.
