Ahead Of Governorship Election, INEC Chairman Arrives In Edo

On Monday, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), arrived in Benin, Edo State capital, as part of the preparations for the state governorship election scheduled for September 21, 2024.

The INEC Chairman’s itinerary includes a series of events aimed at ensuring a smooth election process.

These events will feature mock accreditation at three locations, an assessment of INEC local government offices’ readiness, a meeting with the inter-agency consultative committee on election security, stakeholder engagements, a meeting with INEC staff, a visit to the royal palace, and the signing of a peace accord by political parties.

Timidi Wariowei, Edo State INEC Head of Voters Education and Publicity, announced that on Tuesday, Yakubu will assess readiness in Ikpoba Okha, Egor, Oredo, and Ovia North East LGAs, with mock accreditation taking place at Western Boys High School and Idia College.

On Wednesday, Yakubu is scheduled to meet with stakeholders and visit the palace.

Thursday will feature the signing of the peace accord by political parties, and Yakubu will also meet with INEC staff. The security agencies and INEC meeting will focus on discussing security concerns related to the upcoming election.

He said, “This is to inform everyone that the Chairman of the commission, Prof Mahmood Yakubu, is in town. Please, note that based on the itinerary of the visit, Tuesday will be for the readiness assessment visit to Ikpoba Okha, Egor, Oredo and Ovia North East LGAs.

“Then mock accreditation at Western Boys High School and Idia College will hold by 1pm and we encourage journalists to follow the Chairman and cover these events.”
