Niger Governor Gives Condition For Paying New Minimum Wage

Governor Umaru Bago of Niger State has stated that his administration is prepared to implement the N70,000 minimum wage as long as resources are available.

He made this remark in an interview with reporters following the opening of the 2024 quadrennial state delegate conference of the Medical and Health Workers Union of Nigeria (MHWUN) in Minna, the state capital, on Wednesday.

Represented by his deputy, Mr. Yakubu Garba, Bago noted that the state government is awaiting national-level implementation of the wage increase.

“The issue of minimum wage is a done deal, we are waiting for it as far as funds are available, we will not hesitate to ensure the implementation in the state,” he said.

He revealed that the backlog of salaries for health workers has been settled and that renovation work is underway at 100 healthcare facilities to create a better working environment.

Bago noted that the government has consistently paid counterpart funds and highlighted the creation of the State Ministry for Primary Healthcare Development to address the welfare of health workers.

He expressed gratitude to the union leaders for their cooperative relationship with the state government and urged them to continue collaborating with the government.

While acknowledging that workers have the right to advocate for their entitlements, he encouraged them to also consider the government’s efforts to support their welfare.

The governor advised the incoming executives of MHWUN to prioritize the interests of their members over personal interests.
