NERC Speaks On Reverting Electricity Tariff Hike

The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) has provided reasons for not reverting to the old electricity tariff as directed by the House of Representatives.

On Tuesday, the House instructed NERC and the electricity distribution companies to reverse the tariff hike imposed on Band A customers.

The NERC had increased the electricity tariff on April 3, 2024, for Band A customers, who reportedly receive 20 hours of daily power supply. This hike has caused significant reactions from Nigerians, with Band A consumers now paying N225 per kilowatt-hour, up from the previous N66.

Addressing the concerns over the tariff increase, the House directed NERC and DisCos to return to the old rates. This directive came after the adoption of recommendations from the House Committee on Power, presented by Victor Nwokolo during a session chaired by Deputy Speaker, Hon. Benjamin Kalu.

However, NERC spokesperson Usman Arabi stated that the commission has not yet received official communication from the Representatives regarding this directive.

He said, “We have not received official communication from the house on the directive. Usually, when there are resolutions, they will be communicated officially. But we have yet to receive the resolution.”
