Fubara Defection Rumour Gathers Steam

There are speculations that Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, might soon switch from the Peoples Democratic Party to the Action People’s Party (APP).

The National Chairman of the APP, Uche Nnadi, hinted at this possibility while speaking with reporters in Port Harcourt on Monday.

Nnadi’s comments came in response to the bombing of the APP secretariat in the GRA area of Port Harcourt early that morning.

He condemned the attack as an act of treason and terrorism perpetrated by what he referred to as criminal elements.

Nnadi noted that the bombing happened shortly after some party members had left the office following a meeting that had ended just before midnight on Sunday.

He expressed relief that no lives were lost in the incident, attributing their safety to divine intervention.

“It is really a sad day for democracy. We condemn in strong terms the bombing of our Rivers State chapter secretariat. It is a heinous act. It is an act of terrorism, a treasonable act.

“We thank God Almighty who spared the lives of our members. Immediately they left after a strategic meeting in the dead of the night, this heinous act was carried out.

“God spared the lives of our members so that we did not lose anyone to these criminal elements,” Nnadi stated.

Linking the bombing to the ongoing political turmoil in the state over the past year, Nnadi also attributed it to the upcoming local government election scheduled for October 5, 2024. He suggested that the attack was connected to the APP’s preparations to make a significant impact in the election.

“We are all aware of what is happening in Rivers State, that it is all about seizing the treasury of Rivers State. We know this is not the first time this act of terrorism is happening.

“We have had incidents of bombing before. We are calling on Mr President, the heads of security agencies to go after these criminal elements whose interest is to instil fear, instil  violence in Rivers State.

“As a party, we are not deterred. We are sure that they are getting the signal of Rivers people joining our party en masse in preparation for the forthcoming local government elections and they want to undermine this good policy of our amiable Governor of Rivers State, who wants to conduct local government election.”

There is widespread speculation that Governor Fubara’s anticipated party switch is linked to allegations that his predecessor and estranged political mentor, Nyesom Wike—now the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory—has taken control of the PDP structure in the state.

As a result, it is rumored that the governor plans to transition to the Action People’s Party (APP) along with his supporters.

When asked about these speculations, the state Commissioner for Information and Communications, Joseph Johnson, acknowledged that while the governor had recently voiced his dissatisfaction with the PDP, he was not in a position to confirm Fubara’s intentions.

Johnson stated, “I don’t want to speak on something I’m not sure of. So, if you allow me, I will find out by tomorrow and give you the position.”
