Dangote Refinery Gives Update On When Petrol Will Hit Local Market

Dangote Refinery has reaffirmed that its Premium Motor Spirit (PMS), commonly known as petrol, will be available on the market by August.

Anthony Chiejina, the company’s Group Chief Branding and Communications Officer, made this statement in an interview with Premium Times on Monday.

This clarification addresses concerns following earlier announcements that the refinery would begin domestic supply by mid-August.

When asked why the refinery has not yet started domestic supply as scheduled for August 12, Mr. Chiejina responded, “We said August, and today is August 12. Just wait; this is August.”

The company has previously set dates for launching domestic petrol supply but failed to meet those deadlines.

In June, Aliko Dangote, President of Dangote Group, had stated that petrol refined at the facility would be available in July. During a visit from a Senate delegation led by Senate President Godswill Akpabio, Dangote explained that the delay was due to unforeseen issues, causing the initial June timeline to be pushed back to mid-July.

“We had a bit of delay, but PMS will start coming out by 10 to 15 of July. But then, we want to keep it in the tank to make sure that it settles. So by the third week of July, we’ll be able to come out to take it into the market,” Mr Dangote said at the time.

Again, in July, Mr Dangote said petrol production in the refinery was disrupted because of the fire incident at the refinery.

“PMS was supposed to be out by July, but we had a fire incident. The incident disrupted us for a few days, but latest 10 or 12 of August, PMS will be ready,” Mr Dangote said while addressing journalists at the refinery at the time.
