7.0-magnitude Earthquake, Volcanic Eruption Hit Russia

A volcano has erupted following a 7.0-magnitude earthquake off Russia’s east coast, sending a plume of ash several miles into the air, according to state media reports.

The Shiveluch volcano, located approximately 280 miles from Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, a coastal city in Russia’s Kamchatka region with about 180,000 residents, is at the center of the activity.

TASS reported that the ash column is reaching up to 8 kilometers (5 miles) above sea level and that the volcano has also emitted a flow of lava. Fortunately, there have been no reports of injuries.

The US Geological Survey (USGS) identified the earthquake’s epicenter as about 55 miles from Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, with a depth of approximately 30 miles.

TASS noted that while there was no “major damage” from the quake, inspections are underway to assess potential damage to buildings, with a focus on social facilities.

The Russian Emergencies Ministry has not issued a tsunami warning related to the earthquake, although the US Tsunami Warning System had earlier indicated that “hazardous tsunami waves from this earthquake are possible within 300 km [approximately 186 miles] of the epicenter along the coasts of Russia.”
