The Minister of Transportation, Saidu Alkali, has stepped down from the cabinet of Bola Tinubu, according to a statement released by the State House media office on Tuesday evening.
His resignation comes just hours ahead of the March 31, 2026 deadline set by the President for all political appointees intending to run for elective positions to leave office.
Alkali, an indigene of Gombe State, made his decision known after a meeting with the President at the Presidential Villa on Tuesday.

He is expected to contest the Gombe State governorship in the 2027 general elections, aiming to replace the current governor, Inuwa Yahaya, whose tenure ends in May 2027.
Yahaya was first elected in 2019 and secured a second term in 2023 under the platform of the All Progressives Congress.
Alkali’s exit follows a directive issued by President Tinubu through the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation on March 17, 2026, instructing all appointees with political ambitions to resign on or before March 31.
